Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga temple history –
As per the Shivpurana, the legend behind Grishneshwara temple is that on the mountain called Devagiri, there lived a Brahmin named Brahmvetta Sudharm with his wife, Sudeha. They did not have any child. So, Sudeha got her husband marry her sister, Ghushma. A son was born to Brahmvetta and Ghushma. This made Sudeha jealous of the boy. She killed their son and cut the body into pieces and threw it in a lake where Gushma used to worship lord Shiva. Ghushma came to know about it but continued to worship Shiva on the banks of the lake and continue to chant the mantra ‘Om Namah Shivay’ everyday. This pleased the lord and one day while she was worshiping, he appeared before her along with her son. He told Ghushma that her sister had killed her son. On this Ghushma requested the lord to forgive her sister for her sin. This pleased the lord further and he asked Ghusma for a boon. She requested him to stay at that place forever. On this, the lord transformed himself into a Jyotirlinga near the lake, and the lake itself came to be known as Shivalya.
Another legend about the temple as narrated in the Sthala Purana is that once a king was hunting in the jungle. While hunting, he also killed the animals belonging to the saints living in that jungle. This infuriated the saints and they cursed him. Consequently the whole body of the king was riddled with insects. Infatuated by the curse, the king started wandering in the jungle. His throat was dried with thirst, but he could not find water anywhere. Then suddenly, one day, he struck upon a water hole made by the hooves of a hoarse. Just as the king was just going to drink the water, a miracle took occurred. His body was free of insects. At this, the king started doing rigorous penance. This pleased lord Brahma and he appeared before the king. The lord established Parastha Teerth there and created a large and holy lake at that place. This lake was named Brahma Sarover. Later it came to be known as Shivalya.
The temple was destroyed during the Delhi Sultanate era. It was also rebuilt and destroyed several times during the Maratha- Mughal conflicts. It was reconstructed in the 16th century by Maloji Bhosale, grandfather of Chhtrapati Shvaji, who was the Chief or Patel of Verul, and again in the 18th century by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar, one of the rulers of the erstwhile state of Indore.
